Cases skyrocket, France becomes the new Covid-19 epicenter in Europe

The number of new Covid-19 cases in France has skyrocketed in recent days with the appearance of the Omicron variant. It is estimated that in France, every second, 2 people are positive for SARS-CoV-2.

French Health Minister Olivier Veran on December 29 said that in the past 24 hours, the country recorded more than 208,000 new Covid-19 cases , the highest number since the beginning of the epidemic. The number of infections in France began to break records in recent days, with more than 180,000 cases on December 28, the highest in Europe.

“This means that every second two French people are positive for SARS-CoV-2. We have never experienced such a situation,” said Minister Veran, describing Covid-19 as increasing “dizzy.” in this country.

“The situation in French hospitals is already very worrying because of the Delta mutation, and things will get even worse when the Omicron wave starts to show its impact,” he added.

“We are dealing with two enemies (Delta and Omicron.) With Omicron, I don’t call it a wave anymore, it’s in fact a tsunami,” Mr. Veran said, warning the health system would under more pressure when winter comes with the number of flu cases also increasing sharply.

Europe is facing the most severe outbreak ever. Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Italy and Spain all recorded the highest number of daily infections this week.

Preliminary data suggest that the Omicron variant causes only milder symptoms than other strains of SARS-Cov-2. However, some experts warn, it is too early to confirm the severity of Omicron, the picture will become fuller, clearer by the beginning of next month.
