The discovery of a new strain of Covid-19 in France raises many concerns

Another variant of Covid-19 has been discovered by experts in Marseille, France, in the context of the world’s response to the deadly virus.

Experts at the IHU Mediterranee Infection center in Marseille have issued a warning. They announced on Twitter that they had discovered a new variant in a Covid-19 patient in Forcalquier, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region.

Dubbed “IHU”, the variant was registered under the name B.1.640.2 on the GISAID (Global Initiative for Sharing Virus Data) network. There are currently no further details about this variant, but experts say there is no need to worry yet.

There are many new variants discovered, but that does not mean they will be more dangerous than Delta or Alpha. What makes a variant dangerous is its ability to spread compared to the original strain, like Omicron.

It remains to be seen what features this new variant will have. To see if it spreads or gets worse, researchers will need to conduct epidemiological surveillance.
